From my Sketchbook: Aim for the Stars

INSPIRED BY…

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” ~MICHELANGELO

Michelangelo makes it sound simple, doesn’t he? And for someone with his skill set, obviously it is easier than for someone who is not a sculptor to carve an angel from a solid block of rock. Now I’m not saying he didn’t work hard. Because he did. And maybe there were even moments when he doubted himself. But the thing is…he kept carving until he found his angel in the marble.

And that is a powerful message Michelangelo has gifted to us. A message that can be applied to so many aspects of our lives. If we could only carve away everything that isn’t what we really want in life and magically discover our treasure hidden inside.  All the “things” that prevent us from becoming the person we want to be. Of having the kind of life we want to live. Of surrounding ourselves with the people we want to walk through this life with.

But guess what? We can.

We can…marble chip by marble chip…remove those issues or people or situations in our lives that prevent us from finding our treasure. Our personal angel. And we cannot afford to fall into the trap of setting our aim too low. We need to aim for the stars. That is the task that Michelangelo has set us to.

Is it impossible? Absolutely not. I swear, I swear, I swear.
